The University of Leeds was founded in 1904, although our origins go back to the 19th century with the founding of the Leeds School of Medicine in 1831 and the Yorkshire College of Science in 1874.
Both institutions welcomed local students of all faiths, backgrounds and genders. This inclusivity and commitment to the region are principles we uphold to this day.
Through collaboration, we harness our expertise in research and education to advance knowledge, transform lives and shape a better future for our communities, our region and the world.
Our academic strategy is rooted in our desire to make a difference in the world. Working with others, we use our collective talents, expertise and shared endeavour in research and education to address local and global challenges, achieve social justice, reduce inequalities and help achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
As an international, research-intensive university with a strong commitment to student education we foster an inclusive environment that attracts, develops and retains the best students and staff from all backgrounds from across the world.
We enable our students to thrive through a sense of belonging. They are partners in shaping their own dynamic and innovative educational experience, characterised by active learning, digital technologies and collaboration.
We are ranked in the top 100 universities in the world. With around 40,000 students from across the globe, we are one of the world’s leading research-intensive universities, with a strong sense of purpose and commitment to delivering value to our stakeholders and communities.
The University also plays an important role in the Leeds and wider Yorkshire community. This includes thousands of students and staff working as volunteers in local schools and with community groups.
Residents and visitors are welcome on campus – from accessing our sport and fitness facilities and art and exhibition galleries, to joining our annual public festival of research, Be Curious.
